Interdisciplinary certificate program Data Worlds

The interdisciplinary courses project focus develops and designs the interdisciplinary certificate program Data Worlds.

The aim of the program is to impart basic knowledge in the field of digital and data skills as well as familiarity with digitality, data and methods to students of all subjects. Within this framework, they should acquire technical and practical knowledge and learn to critically reflect on digitalization and data practices from different perspectives. The two are closely linked: In order to understand the changes brought about by datafication and digitalization in society, it is necessary to understand the fundamental ways in which they function. On the other hand, in order to be able to handle data competently, you not only need to know the processes, but also be able to assess the associated ethical and epistemological implications.

Immerse yourself in the world of data: Lectures and exercises

The core of the program consists of the lectures Data Worlds 1 and Data Worlds 2 as well as the corresponding optional exercises.

It is possible to start in any semester: the Data Worlds 1 lecture begins in the winter semester and deals with the concept of data, data storage and various evaluation methods, including from the field of machine learning, as well as data economics. This is followed in the summer semester by Data Worlds 2, which reflects on data worlds. Here, the focus will be on various areas of society and critical aspects (e.g. discrimination by algorithms) and data protection. The lectures are accompanied by exercises in which the content taught is tested in practice. The students are picked up where they are. No prior knowledge is therefore expected.
